What is Perapera?

How is Perapera different from Duolingo or Pimsleur?
Duolingo focuses heavily on tapping and matching, with limited speaking practice. Pimsleur is audio-only with no real-time feedback. Perapera is built around speaking: every session forces you to produce Japanese aloud, and an LLM grades your answer on clarity, grammar, naturalness, and politeness, then corrects mistakes word by word.
Do I need to know any Japanese to start?
No. The Level 1 prompts are basic greetings like "Good morning" and "Thank you". You can practice with kanji + furigana, full hiragana, or romaji depending on what you can read.
Is there a free trial?
Yes. The Standard plan includes a 3-day free trial. You can cancel anytime during the trial in your device subscription settings.
How does the AI scoring work?
Your spoken answer is transcribed by your device's on-device speech recognition (no audio leaves your phone). The text is then sent to a large language model that scores it on four axes — clarity, grammar, naturalness, politeness — and returns specific corrections plus a politeness note.
What devices are supported?
iPhone (iOS 16 or later) and Android (planned). The app uses Apple's built-in Speech Recognition for accurate Japanese transcription.
Is my voice data stored?
No. Speech recognition runs on your device. Only the transcribed text is sent to our servers for grading. We do not store raw audio.
Can I cancel my subscription anytime?
Yes. Cancel at any time in iOS Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions, or in the Google Play Store. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period.
